Jury Duty Scam Warning

by Lynne Palombo on 2021-12-14T07:58:00-08:00 | 0 Comments

Jury duty is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens. Unfortunately, some scammers are using jury duty as a cover to steal financial and personal information.

The Oregon Judicial Department (OJD) reports Oregonians are being targeted by fraudulent phone calls, emails, or texts threatening them with fines, prosecution, or jail time for failing to comply with jury service.

State and federal courts do not require anyone to provide sensitive information in a telephone call, email, or text. Oregon state courts may provide jury notices and reminders by text, but these will not request personal information, make threats, or demand money.

If you receive a bogus jury-related telephone call, text, or email, do not provide any information or payment, reply directly to the text or email, click on any links, or open any attachments.

To check if a court has actually attempted to contact you, please look up and call the official number for the court.

For Oregon’s federal courts, information about jury service and possible scams is available at ord.uscourts.gov/jurors.

Remember

  • Don’t give out personal or financial information over the phone or by email to a purported court official.
  • Don’t respond to emails or call back numbers about missed jury service.
  • Don’t provide any payment.
  • Don’t assume a call is legitimate because caller ID says it comes from the court. Scammers use spoofing technology to trick caller ID.
